The Truth About Toothpaste

The simple truth is, you don’t need toothpaste at all. You use toothpaste because it tastes good, to get rid of that nasty taste in your mouth. From a marketing perspective, all of the other things that are in your toothpaste are in there to give it additional perceived value. But these are added chemical agents that are actually unnecessary to the task itself. And on top of that these added chemicals, even the added fluoride that most commercial brands contain could be harmful to some users (just try reading the label).

The point is that toothpaste is not soap or a cleanser it is own right, it is the act of brushing that scrapes away the plaque that damages enamel and causes tooth decay. So instead of more fluoride, we really should be brushing for longer and taking care of floss.

If you want to make sure you don’t put any toxins in your mouth, there are plenty of natural toothpaste for sell. You can also make your own toothpaste using baking soda, salt and peppermint. Just add a little water until you reach your desired consistency. Another good thing to do is “oil pulling” also named “Kavala”. This is an Ayurvedic dental technique and it works like this: swish a tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth first thing in the morning for around 20 minutes. This will draw toxins out of your body, improve oral and overall health, and it is also a good form of meditation 🙂

Other reasons why you should swap to natural products as tooth paste:

  • It is earth friendly! Natural products are farmed and manufactured organically so fewer chemicals are put into the air and water.
  • Save your nose. The nice smell in traditional health and beauty products is just to cover up the smell of other chemicals.
  • No strange side effects! Artificial ingredients in conventionally produced products like parabens are used to extend the shelf life. Parabens mimic your body’s natural hormones and there could be possible side effects that are still being uncovered.
  • Natural products are never tested on animals!
