Research has demonstrated that inhibited breathing is adopted as a means of defense against the awareness of uncomfortable somatic experiences. Conditioned suppression of breathing is associated with elevations in blood pressure and high levels of CO2 in the blood, lowered metabolism and reduced serotonin synthesis.
Most of us don’t breathe fully. We may have been holding it in since the first breath when the umbilical cord was cut too soon and we were swung upside down and spanked.
Our minds are well designed to remember traumatic events and try to prevent them from happening again. The challenge, then, is that we naturally overcompensate for these old experiences in a way that drains the magic, adventure and joy from our current life.
By opening to our full breath we can release chronic tension held in the nervous system and restructure at a cellular level, which leads to an opening of the spine.
Breath work may also activate old emotions or memories. By infusing it with awareness we are able to uncover and transform limiting thoughts and beliefs.
