Andrea’s Chai Tea

Finally at Avocado Cafe: Chai tea! Our tea is created by Avocado Cafe family member Andrea, who studied nutrition science and has knowledge of Ayurveda and Yoga, creates our chai tea latte with local spices and much love.

Chai tea is an Ayurveda product – the traditional and holistic medicine of India. A typical Chai tea combines a blend of herbs, spices, and tea leaves brewed in milk and water. The blend of spices contains medicinal and healing properties such as relaxing the digestive tract, elevating the metabolism, and increasing waste and toxin excretion. Different regions of India have their own version of chai and traditionally each family would have their own recipe.

Here is our suggestion for a yummy Chai tea latte:

Recipe

6 serves

2- inch piece fresh ginger, cut into thin rounds

2 cinnamon sticks

2 teaspoons black peppercorns

10 whole cloves

6 cardamom pods

2 whole anise

6 tablespoons black tea

2   cups milk (cow-, almond-, cashew-, soymilk)

First, combine all the ingredients except the black tea in a bowl. After that put them on a wooden cutting board and use a mallet or a big knife and lightly crush or bruise the spices. You can also use a food processor, but make sure that you don’t crush them to small. Then add the black tea and mix everything well in a pot. Add 6 cups hot water and bring them to boil over heat. Reduce the heat to medium- low, partially cover the pot and simmer gently 10 minutes. Then remove it from the heat. Discard the brew from the spices and add your choice of milk and add optionally sugar (recommend to use brown coconut sugar). Bring the tea just to simmer over high heat, whisking until sugar dissolves. Strain chai into nice tea mugs and serve hot.

Feel free to try your own magic recipe and add your favourite spices at home.
